LOS ANGELES - Following the release of presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren’s immigration plan Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center Immigrant Justice Fund, released the following statement.

“Senator Warren’s proposal takes substantive steps to undo the work that the Trump administration has done to dehumanize immigrants. It includes provisions to end the criminalization of migration and would put in place much-needed accountability mechanisms to ensure these civil rights attacks on immigrant communities are not carried out by the next administration. Her plan shows that she has an understanding of the complexity of the current system and that there is no single bill that will address the country’s needs when it comes to immigration, but instead that we need to address root causes, engage in administrative and structural reforms, as well as change management within ICE and Customs and Border Patrol. It is noteworthy that Senator Warren’s plan sees immigration through an economic justice lens and the impact on both U.S.-born and immigrant workers alike.

“While this is a strong proposal, all the 2020 candidates can go further to advance a bold vision for immigrants and immigration in this country. Immigration is one of the defining issues of our time and it’s the issue candidates can win on if they propose a bold vision about who we want to become as a nation. Americans and aspiring Americans are hungry for a candidate with a plan for the country that is inclusive and that is rooted in one of our founding principles that all people have the opportunity to get ahead. Candidates who advocate for this vision will present a winning contrast that flies in the face of Trump’s policies of division, distraction, and hate.”
